We endeavor to promote safe working and the well-being of our employees and the
community in which we operate at all times. At KDC we avoid accidents by
choice, not by chance, and it is our firm belief that an incident-free
workplace is possible every day of the year.
Our approach to safety is simple and effective. Jobs are analyzed to identify,
evaluate and control hazards. Our crews receive on-going training in safety
matters. And we encourage safe working with regular awards for the achievement
of safety standards and milestones.
Training is provided by our own safety officers and by carefully chosen third
parties using courses especially adapted to the conditions in drilling, with an
emphasis on the recognition and prevention of hazards. Our crews' awareness of
safety matters is reinforced with strict discipline in the field.
We encourage adherence to safety procedures with certificates and prizes. These
are awarded weekly for the recognition and avoidance of work hazards. Rigs earn
points for safety and other criteria that accumulate into Rig of the Month and
Rig of the Year awards for which the winning crews receive prizes. Crews whose
rigs achieve safety milestones, such as a whole year without a lost-time
incident (LTI), also receive substantial bonuses.
KDC's safety measures and training programmes are proving very effective in
ensuring safety at work. The identification of potential hazards has more than
doubled in recent years, while the number of significant incidents has been
reduced by almost half. One KDC rig has operated for more than six years
without a single LTI, while two other rigs have exceeded 1,000,000 man-hours
each without any lost time incidents.
To further enhance our capabilities to operate safely, we recently became the
first drilling company in Kuwait to certify to the OHSAS 18001 standard of the
international Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series.
Our exemplary safety records are recognized by our customers and many others in the industry. As a member of the International Association of Drilling Contractors, KDC's safety records have been validated by the IADC. The Safety achievements of KDC's rigs No. 16, 17 and 26 have been sighted in the IADC's magazine Drilling Contractors Monthly. Due to these outstanding achievements and our overall safety record, we were invited to send a delegation to address the IADC HSE Europe Conference in Amsterdam in October 2006 on KDC's safe-working methodology.
